Chapter Seven
Though His Highness looked weary from lack of sleep the next morning, he instantly regained his sense of dignified grandeur once we arrived at the mayorâs house, showing a pleasant smile to those who welcomed him.
âWhat a wonderful day this is,â said the mayor, a large, portly man in his middle years. âThe honor of hosting His Highness the Crown Prince in my own home has me in seventh heaven. I shall remember it until the day I die. No, it will be remembered for generations! Thank you so very, very much.â
He certainly seemed to be in a good mood. His belly, large enough to rival my fatherâs, seemed full to bursting from all this joy.
âOh, not at all,â His Highness replied. âIâm grateful that youâve offered me a forum to meet and exchange words with the townspeople. Itâs an excellent opportunity that I wouldnât normally be granted. Thank you for arranging it.â
Though his words made implicit that this was indeed purely an opportunity to interact with the locals, he maintained an outwardly placid and openhearted expression. However inconvenient the scenario, however insufficient his sleep, and however much he was afraid of ghosts, His Highness was ever the perfect prince, showing no signs of any discomfort on the surface. Given his gloomy mood up to and including the moment before he stepped out of the carriage, it was quite a miraculous transformation.
I surreptitiously asked Lord Simeon, âHave you not spoken to His Highness at all?â
My uniformed husband was here on guard duty; even when I walked by his side, he didnât embrace me and draw me closer. It wasnât appropriate while he was working. Though it did make me feel a touch of sadness, the kindness in his light blue eyes as he gazed down gave me the strength to hold on.
âSurely you could tell him about your theory. The room with the summoning bell is so close to the tower heâs staying in. He must spend all night trembling with fear.â
âIâve said all along that itâs not a ghost,â he replied with a composed expression. âThereâs nothing for him to be afraid of.â
Isnât it worse to be so dismissive? His Highness is Lord Simeonâs dear friend, not to mention his liege lord. Iâm surprised heâd be so callous, especially when heâs attentive to me to the point of being overprotective. Perhaps itâs different between two men? My, this is a marvelous taste of Lord Simeonâs brutal side.
The eyes of every lady in the room kept flicking toward him. Yes, heâs most handsome, isnât he? One canât help fangirling over his blackhearted appeal! But despite appearances, on the inside, heâs adorably sweet!
âI wonder if itâll ring again tonight,â I asked.
âMost likely. Weâll draw an end to it then.â
Our stay in Embourg was only planned to last until around noon tomorrow, and it sounded as though Lord Simeon had every intention of pinning down the perpetrator well before then. Thatâs all well and good, but will catching them really be
